San Beda University snatched its fifth straight win at the expense of Jose Rizal University.
San Beda University kept its unbeaten slate intact and the hold of the lead after surviving a scare from gritty Jose Rizal University, 17-25, 25-13, 25-9, 21-25, 15-11, Thursday in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Nieza Viray recorded a personal-best 26 points while skipper Cesca Racraquin came a point short of equaling her career-high with 25 to rally the Lady Red Spikers to their fifth straight win.
Viray hammered 23 spikes and landed three aces while Racraquin had an all-around effort with 18 kills, six aces and a kill block laced with 22 digs for San Beda, which needed a scorching 6-0 blitz in the closing stretch to pocket the victory.
“Medyo slow start kami eh, siguro nasobrahan ng kompiyansa. Nakuha yung second and third pero pagdating sa fourth, ganoon din nag-relax ulit. Ang alam ko talaga babawi ang kalaban, sinabihan ko naman sila eh. Thankful pa rin kami na nakuha namin pagdating ng straight sets,” said Lady Red Spikers coach Nemesio Gavino, whose squad will face College of St. Benilde on Monday.
Jeziela Viray had nine points while Sattriani Espiritu finished with eight including San Beda’s last three points in the game. The Lady Red Spikers outgunned the Lady Bombers, 60-40 and landed 11 aces.
Racraquin showed grace under pressure as she nailed three straight hits to erase the Lady Red Spikers’ 9-11 deficit in the deciding frame after allowing JRU to score five points in a row to claim the lead.
Espiritu then sealed the frame with three consecutive points including a kill block on Dolly Versoza that sealed the one-hour, 40-minute duel.
San Beda broke a 6-6 deadlock in the fifth frame with three straight points coming off JRU’s miscues for a 9-6 lead.
The Lady Bombers saw their two-game winning streak snapped and slid to 2-3 card.
Versoza, Karen Montojo and Rizza Rose scored 12 points each while Mary May Ruiz had 10 for JRU.
Meanwhile, the Bombers blasted the Red Spikers, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 28-26, for a 2-3 slate the men’s division.
Arjay Ausina and Hernan Salazar scored 15 and 13 points each to lead JRU in handing San Beda its fourth defeat in five games.
In juniors play, Jasper Palma and Marcelo Revilla posted 19 points each in the Light Bombers’ 16-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 15-9 win over the Red Cubs.
