Mapua University snapped a 23-game losing streak with a dominating sweep of Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Mapua University finally captured an elusive win.
The Lady Cardinals ended a long and agonizing three-year losing drought with a morale-boosting win over languishing Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-14, 25-23, 25-14, Thursday in the resumption of the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The trio of Jan Morano, Jonina Fernandez and Lorraine Barias showed the way as Mapua snapped a 23-game losing streak. The Lady Cardinals got its first win of the season after six games.
Mapua overhauled a 3-8 deficit to open the third set with an 11-1 rally to take a 14-9 lead that ballooned to 24-14 off a Barias kill before the Lady Generals surrendered the match with their last of 28 errors.
“Thank God na nabasag na rin namin ang itlog na sobrang tagal na naming (tiniis). Sobrang sakit na sa ulo,” said second year assistant coach Paul Doloiras, who is also the head coach of University of Sto. Tomas’ multi-titled UAAP women’s and beach volleyball teams. “Ngayon nagsisimula na kami, ngayon kahit papaano may material na kami.”
Morano, who was the only player in the roster that was part of the Lady Cardinals last win – a five-set victory over Letran back in January 7, 2016, scored 14 points, she collected off six aces, five attacks and three kill blocks.
Fernandez had seven kills in her nine-point outing while Barias also had nine markers, 15 digs and five excellent receptions for Mapua.
EAC showed signs of life in the second set after a sluggish start as they kept their distance from Mapua for most of the frame. The Lady Generals squandered a 22-20 lead as the Lady Cardinals tied the set at 22.
Mapua committed an error in the next play but got the point back to knot it again at 23. Barias scored on a crosscourt kill before Morano landed an ace to seal the set victory.
The Lady Cardinals will take on Letran next week.
The Lady Generals dropped to 0-7 card. EAC’s last two assignments are against unbeaten grand slam-seeking Arellano University and Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Jaylene Lumbo was the only Lady General in double figures with 10 points.
