University of Perpetual Help turned back twice-to-beat College of St. Benilde to force a decider for the last Finals berth.
University of Perpetual Help survived twice-to-beat College of St. Benilde’s comeback scare with a gallant stand in the fourth set to eke out a 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, victory and force a rubbermatch in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball Final Four at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan Tuesday.
The Lady Altas showed nerves of steel and veteran composure to erase a 14-22 hole in the fourth frame with a blistering rally that snapped the Lady Blazers’ eight game winning streak.
The winner-take-all match for the right to face defending two-time champion Arellano University in the best-of-three Finals is set on Tuesday.
Cindy Imbo delivered 19 points coming off 16 attacks and three aces while adding 17 digs and 16 excellent receptions for the Las Pinas-based squad. Jenny Gaviola got 15 markers while Jhona Rosal had 11 points for the Lady Altas, who got 31 free points off CSB’s errors including the last five points of Perpetual.
The Lady Altas saw themselves in deep trouble in the fourth set after trailing by eight points and the Lady Blazers gaining momentum after yielding the first two frames.
Perpetual head coach Macky Carino made some adjustments in his rotation that threw CSB out of its game.
“Sobrang nag-gamble na ako. Ipinasok ko na ‘yung dalawa. Medyo off na ang laro ni Rosal tapos si Chinchin (Necelle Gual) basang-basa na ng kalaban. Ang ginawa ko para hindi na masyado mabasa ipinalit ko na si Jowie (Versoza) saka ‘yung (Angelou) Castillo. Sugal na ‘yun eh. Isinugal ko na talaga kung anong mangyari,” said Carino, who steered CSB to its breakthrough women’s title in Season 91 before transferring to Perpetual last year.
“Fortunately, maganda ‘yung kinalabasan plus hinabol pa ng hinabol ni Cindy ‘yung service. Target ng target. Siguro sa ginawa naming ‘yun, ‘yung character namin that time, ‘yun ang nagpanalo,” he added.
Imbo scored four points including back-to-back aces in the Lady Altas’ scorching 8-0 rally in the fourth frame that knotted the score at 22.
Castillo committed an error in the next play as CSB retook the lead but the Lady Blazers threw their chances away with attack miscues by Michelle Gamit and Maritess Pablo.
Rachel Austero was a monster at the net with six kill blocks for an 18-point outing, Klarisa Abriam got 15 points while Pablo finished with 12 markers, 26 digs and 10 excellent receptions in a lost cause for CSB.
