College of St. Benilde and University of Perpetual Help dispute the last Finals berth in the NCAA Season 94 women's volleyball competition.
Head coach Macky Carino made history when he steered College of St. Benilde to its breakthrough title three years ago.
Now facing his former squad Tuesday, Carino and University of Perpetual Help shoot to write their own history in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Altas and Lady Blazers battle one last time in the Final Four for the right to claim the last championship berth to challenge the reign of two-time defending champion Arellano University.
The two squads go for all the marbles in their 4:00 p.m. clash that will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.
No. 4 seed Perpetual shocked top seed and twice-to-beat CSB, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, last week to force a rubbermatch.
“Dito naman ako nagsimula sa Perpetual. Parte ako nu’ng gumawa ng history sa men’s team kay coach Sammy (Acaylar). Ngayon happy ulit ako na magse-serve ako sa Perpetual, gagawa ako ng history sa babae naman,” said a very confident Carino, who back in Season 91 steered no. 4 seed CSB into the throne by knocking out Perpetual and then reigning champion Lady Chiefs in the stepladder semis before scoring a historic upset over thrice-to-beat San Sebastian College in four games.
Now, Carino hopes to do the same for the Lady Altas, who last held the crown back in Season 89, in his second year as mentor.
“Kasi ilang taon na rin na wala sa championship. Kasi malay mo isang game na lang aabot kami ng Finals. Pagdating ng Finals malay mo kami ang mag-champion,” he added. “Walang imposible basta gusto namin ang ginagawa namin. Sinasabi ko sa kanila na, ‘mamimili lang tayo kung gusto ba natin manalo o ayaw nating manalo?’”
However, it won’t be a walk in the park.
CSB mentor Jerry Yee sees the one week break as a chance for his wards to lick their wounds and regroup.
“Good na may [one week break]. Medyo syempre mabigat yung loss,” said Yee of their setback that snapped the Lady Blazers’ eight-game winning streak. “Kumbaga, we need time to recover so one week is good enough, long enough. Tagal nga eh. So good yun.”
Perpetual will pin its hopes on Cindy Imbo, Jhona Rosal, Jenny Gaviola and Bianca Tripoli while CSB will rely on seniors player Rachel Austero, Klarisa Abriam and Marites Pablo.
Meanwhile, CSB and fourth seed Emilio Aguinaldo College clash at 2:00 p.m. for the right to face reigning champion Perpetual in the best-of-three men’s Finals.
In the juniors division, Letran and Lyceum of the Philippines University faceoff at 12:00 noon for the last Finals berth against defending champion Junior Altas.
