University of Perpetual Help will have teams vying for the crown in all three divisions of the NCAA Season 94 volleyball competition.
University of Perpetual Help guns for a rare triple crown as its men’s, women’s and juniors teams march into their respective NCAA Season 94 volleyball competition best-of-three Finals series Friday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Las Pinas-based squad will try to duplicate the feat of San Sebastian College and then member school Ateneo de Manila University of sweeping all three divisions. SSC-R did it five times (1985, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2003) while Ateneo became the first school to complete the feat in 1977.
“Bilang isang sports director tsaka head coach ng men’s, this is great,” said Altas head coach Sammy Acaylar, who is also Perpetual's athletic director. “Actually, ipinagdasal namin ‘to kasi never in the history (of Perpetual), tatlong teams ‘yung pumasok. Lagi na lang men’s at juniors, sometimes women’s and men’s. This is great for our school and the support of the school is more than 120 percent.”
First to compete are the five-peat-seeking Junior Altas at 11:30 a.m. against Letran.
Perpetual is coming off a two-week break after sweeping the elimination round to advance outright into the championship.
The Squires crawled their way into the Finals after beating Emilio Aguinaldo College and Lyceum of the Philippines University in the stepladder semifinals.
After the juniors match, the reigning men’s titlist Altas square off with dangerous College of St. Benilde at 2:00 p.m.
Just like its high school squad, Perpetual swept through the elims to clinch an automatic Finals berth.
The Blazers, who prevented the Altas from winning back-to-back titles in Season 92, forged a Finals rematch with Perpetual after booting out EAC last Tuesday.
Acaylar knows that they’re heading for a tough grind.
“They’re good, they’re very strong, and they have a good height also,” he said of their rival. Magkakatalo lang kami sa puso ng game kasi Benilde is one of the strong teams in the NCAA. During the PVL sila nakapasok, during UniGames sila ang nag-Finals kami hindi but my program is not for PVL, not for UniGames. My program is for the NCAA because ‘yun ang focus namin.”
The Altas put into good use their two-week break by playing tune-up games against UAAP teams reigning champion National University, Ateneo and Adamson University.
Capping Perpetual’s Finals opening playdate are the Lady Altas’ 4:00 p.m. match against grand slam-seeking Arellano University.
The Macky Carino-mentored Perpetual squad went through the proverbial eye of the needle as the Lady Altas beat top seed College of St. Benilde twice in the Final Four to advance to their first Finals stint since winning it all in Season 89.
The men's and women's championship series will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream.
