Defending two-time champion Arellano University forced a series decider after defeating University of Perpetual Help in five sets Friday in Game 2 of the NCAA Season 94 best-of-three Finals.
Defending two-time champion Arellano University lived to fight another day.
The Lady Chiefs refused to surrender their crown as they came back from a set down to beat University of Perpetual Help, 23-25, 25-9, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12, Friday in Game 2 of the best-of-three NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball Finals at the FiOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Arellano U and Perpetual will meet in the winner-take-all decider on Tuesday. The Lady Altas defeated the Lady Chiefs in four sets in the series opener a week ago.
Regine Arocha, Princess Bello and Season Most Valuable Player Necole Ebuen teamed up in the tight fifth set to extend the series.
Ebuen scored all of her 18 points off kills and added 18 digs while Bello fired 18 markers for the Lady Chiefs, who rained down 58 attack points and received 37 markers off the Lady Altas' errors. Carla Donato had 13 points while Arocha got 12 for Arellano U.
"Unang-una ibinalik namin ang posisyon namin noong elimination, isinugal ko na ulit. Sabi ko noong elimination sa ganoong posisyon nanalo tayo eh," said Arellano U coach Obet Javier. "Tinry namin ulit tapos nag-adjust kami sa receive at sa block and kahit papaano napigil namin si Imbo ngayon. Siguto malaing bagay yung sa blockings."
Arellano U broke an 8-8 deadlock with three straight points before Perpetual stopped the bleeding in the fifth frame. The Lady Chiefs again took a 13-9 lead but committed back-to-back errors as Perpetual closed in.
Ebuen, who played hurt after spraining her right foot midway in the fifth frame, pushed Arellano U at match point with an off the block hit. Cindy Imbo saved a point with a down the line hit but Hershey Llorente overcooked her serve.
The Lady Altas forced the deciding frame after erasing a 17-20 deficit behind Cindy Imbo’s heroics to take a 21-20 lead. Princess Bello tied it at 21 before Perpetual scored the next three points. Bello saved a set point before Jowie Albert Versoza hammered the set-winner.
Arellano U squandered a 20-17 lead in the opening frame, allowing Perpetual to counter with five unanswered points to take a 22-20 lead. The two squads got into seesaw battle in the next couple of plays before the Lady Chiefs surrendered the set with a costly error.
Arellano U woke up from a slump in the second frame as the Lady Chiefs crushed the Lady Altas, who only had two kills, a kill block and two aces in the set.
The third frame started out tight before Arellano found a way to create enough separation to take a 2-1 match lead.
Imbo was the only Perpetual player in double figures with 18 points while Jhona Rosal and Gaviola combined for 15 markers.
