LSGH in search of coach; Bienvenida focuses on another role
Marvin Bienvenida, CSB-LSGH's first and only champion coach, will have a new role with the Junior Blazers

With longtime powerhouses Mapua High School and San Beda High School changing their coaches, the field in the looming NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament was going to be different.

That is even truer now that the runner-up from a year ago will have a brand new shot-caller.

College of St. Benilde-La Salle Green Hills bared on Thursday that Marvin Bienvenida has stepped down from his post as head coach.

Bienvenida guided the Junior Blazers to their first and only championship in school history back in 2017. He compiled a 48-19 record in his three years as shot-caller.

Now, he will focus on his administrative role as the school's athletic director. "I would like to give more time to the other sports who want to improve and be successful especially in the NCAA. It's a good time na rin to focus on my growing kids because I could go home a little earlier," he said.

Bienvenida leaves behind a program that has completed the climb from being bottom-feeders to perennial contenders.

Whoever takes his place will have a tall task ahead of him as, aside from replacing a champion coach, he will also have to guide a side that will no longer have NCAA 94 MVP Joel Cagulangan as well as key cogs Joshua David and Inand Fornilos.

CSB-LSGH is still in the process of a coaching search, but Bienvenida said he has made a recommendation.

This is the latest development in an offseason that saw Yong Garcia take over for Randy Alcantara with the Red Robins, Manu Inigo take over for JB Sison with the Red Cubs, Junjie Ablan take over for Tylon Darjuan in Arellano High School, and Ian Sangco take over for LA Mumar in Lyceum of the Philippines University.

At present, Raymond Valenzona remains Colegio de San Juan de Letran head coach, Ashley Guro remains Emilio Aguinaldo College head coach, Vic Lazaro remains Jose Rizal University High School head coach, Melo Banua remains San Sebastian College-Recoletos head coach, and Mike Saguiguit remains University of Perpetual Help head coach.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been updated to correct the initial report that Letran has changed coaches. Raymond Valenzona remains the Squires’ head coach while Raymond Tiongco serves as Bonnie Tan’s assistant with the Srs. squad.)
