Mac Guadana wasted no time in filling it up and fronting LPU's sail to win no. 1
Mac Guadana was in complete command, Monday inside Filoil Flying V Centre as Lyceum of the Philippines University lived up to its billing as a new league heavyweight in a 74-64 triumph over Colegio de San Juan de Letran to open the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Guadana, the Cavite-based school's shining star, posted a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double on top of three assists and a steal to lead three other teammates in double-digits.
Jae Omandac and Raphael Garro were right there with him with 14 and 11 points, respectively, as the Junior Pirates sailed to a wire-to-wire win to start the season. "Happy kami para sa first win namin. Ang nakikita naming edge ngayon, half ng team namin, beterano led by Mac and John," first-year head coach JC Docto said post-game.
That team effort proved to be enough to offset the loss of John Barba who came out in the third quarter due to an apparent right knee injury. "May nag-pop daw sa tuhod e, pero ite-test pa," coach JC shared.
Still, the hardnosed forward had 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists in only 18 minutes of play.
The double-digit win was a strong start to a season that has LPU poised for a breakout, at long last.
On the other hand, the Squires suffered a setback in their opener despite the best efforts of CJ Saure who had 23 points and eight rebounds.
