San Sebastian College-Recoletos paid tribute to the late Miguel Bonalos to commence its campaign in the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament, last Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
In their season-opening matchup opposite Jose Rizal University High School, the Staglets wore white warmers with Bonalos' name printed on the back and his jersey no. 23 printed on the right sleeve.
For Baste, this was all but a small step in remembering Bonalos who passed away a week ago due to cardiac arrest. "There was no concrete plan naman talaga to do such. Siguro, it's more of a natural gesture when you lose someone special and Bon is special to us," head coach Melo Banua said.
He then continued, "He's not only a player to me and a teammate to his co-players, he's family to us. He will always be."
The late forward represented the Recto-based school last season in the NCAA and averaged 5.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in nine games.
And the white warmers with his name and number isn't the last time San Sebastian will pay tribute to Bonalos. "We are dedicating this season to him. Now, we have another reason to win the title," Coach Melo said.
