Ben Adamos walked in the shoes of Prince Eze, but it was Edgar Charcos who made sure University of Perpetual Help didn’t skip a beat in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament as they warded off very game Mapua University, 80-78, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

Adamos proved to be a good fit in place of last year’s MVP Eze with eight points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks in his debut in wine and gold.

With the two teams going at it, however, it was Charcos who took matters in his own hands, going on a personal 8-0 run to break a tied tally at 69-all and build a 77-69 edge in favor of the Altas with 4:10 remaining.

"It's a show of character para sa amin. I felt na Mapua is stronger than us, pero it was just guts," a satisfied head coach Frankie Lim said post-game.

Of course, the Cardinals kept coming and Laurenz Victoria's triple closed them to within one, 78-79, with 8.2 ticks to go.

Sent to the line, though, Charcos wrapped up his team's season-opening win for good by going 1-of-2.

In the end, Perps' playmaker wound up with 16 points, all but five coming in the last seven minutes, to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Tonton Peralta topped the scoring column with 20 points while Jielo Razon also added 10 markers, four rebounds, and two assists.

"Big game also from Adamos, Jielo, and Tonton. Sabi ko naman sa kanila, wala tayong star, we need team effort," coach Frankie said.

For Mapua, Warren Bonifacio showed the way with 15 points and nine rebounds and was backstopped by Cyril Gonzales with 14 markers, five assists, five steals, and three boards.

Despite the season-opening loss, the young Cardinals proved they will be no pushovers under new head coach Randy Alcantara.
