Jethro Mendoza punctuated Emilio Aguinaldo College's biggest win in years with a cool, calm, and collected layup that put away contending Lyceum of the Philippines University, 84-82, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

The graduating guard's layup with 1.5 ticks to go on the clock proved to be the difference between the two teams and the defining basket for the Generals' first win following a loss to open the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament. "Of course, morale-booster 'to. Like what I told them before, kung maglalaro nang tama, may chance kaming manalo against big teams," a more than satisfied head coach Oliver Bunyi said.

With the tally tied at 70-all and the ball with the Pirates, EAC forced a defensive stop and quickly pushed onto its side of the court.

Three Generals touched the ball before finding Mendoza with a good look inside the paint - and he did nothing but make good on the golden opportunity.

Not long after, the San Marcelino-based squad was celebrating its first triumph over LPU since 2016 and its biggest win since downing eventual champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran back in 2015. "Naglaro sila nang tama and biniyayaan kami, we're blessed with a win versus LPU," coach Oliver said.

Mendoza wound up with 21 points built on six triples while Marwin Taywan had 21 markers of his own on top of five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

JP Maguliano then posted a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double to help EAC gift its first-year mentor with his first win.

Jaycee Marcelino paced the Pirates with 23 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists while Reymar Caduyac also added 17 markers, five dimes, and four boards.

Running out of gas in the endgame, they were unable to build on their season-opening victory versus the Knights.
