Evan Nelle already had 11 assists at halftime in San Beda's rout of JRU
Evan Nelle set it all up, Calvin Oftana and James Canlas served up the goods, and San Beda University stamped its class on Jose Rizal University, 74-52, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre for back-to-back wins to begin the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Nelle only had five points, but threatened to top Jiovani Jalalon's record for assists in a game and totaled 14 at the end of it all. "We thought na yung 11 assists niya (at halftime), magiging record-breaking na, but we missed shots nung second half," head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
Just at halftime, the second-year point guard already had 11 dimes, most of which went to "Bandana Bro" Canlas as well as Oftana.
Those three was at the head of the spear as the Red Lions busted out a 15-0 run to open the matchup.
In the end, Canlas had 17 points and eight rebounds while Oftana had 17 markers and 10 boards.
Nelle also added three steals to his name as JB Bahio chimed in 11 points.
The long-limbed playmaker just fell short of the 16 assists in a game once recorded by Jalalon when he was still playing for Arellano University back in 2015, but more importantly, thought that he should have done more in terms of scoring. "Bad game for me e. Honestly, hindi ako maka-shoot so nag-create na lang ako para sa teammates ko kasi sila, nakaka-shoot," he said.
The Heavy Bombers got energized quite a bit by high school recruits Marwin Dionisio and John Amores. Still, that proved far from enough from preventing their second straight setback to start the season.
