Jerrick Balanza struggled from the field, but Letran got much-welcome contributions from Bonbon Batiller in their first win run in NCAA 95
Colegio de San Juan de Letran trudged through a defensive battle before pulling out a gritty 55-43 triumph over Jose Rizal University, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Bonbon Batiller was the lone player in double-digits with 14 points on top of four rebounds and four assists, but it was the Knights’ stout defense that keyed their first win run in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The Walls of Intramuros stood strong and stymied their opponents into 16-of-57 shooting from the field.
They also made certain to finish defensive stops and dominated in terms of rebounding, 44-29.
Still, the young Heavy Bombers kept coming and got within six, 32-38, late in the third only to see Letran respond with a 10-3 run that re-increased its lead to 48-35, early in the fourth.
The Knights would not look back and charged to a 2-1 standing.
The stout defense more than made up for the struggles of Jerrick Balanza who only had six points in 3-of-11 shooting as well as Larry Muyang and Jeo Ambohot who merged for just seven markers.
That also more than made up for their 24 turnovers that were turned into 18 points.
For JRU, Ry Dela Rosa was the only double-digit scorer with 15 points. They remain winless in three games
