San Sebastian College-Recoletos has barged into the win column of the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament - and at the same time, locked out defending champion Mapua High School.

Dylan Darbin led other three teammates in double-digits as the Staglets fought off a late rally by the Red Robins, 64-62, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

Darbin scored 14 points on top of eight rebounds while Randolph Perez contributed 13 markers and nine boards of his own.

Milo Janao and Dave Balo both also added 10 points and nine rebounds to help Baste even its record at 1-1.

It didn’t come easy, though, as they had a 14-point lead after three quarters only to see Mapua battle back to within two with 5.5 ticks to go. “Nabigla siguro yung mga bata. ‘Di pa sila sanay sa pressure kasi most of our players, mga bago,” head coach Melo Banua said post-game.

San Sebastian stood strong at that point, however, and forced a contested triple from John Echavia that fell short. “At least, a win is a win pa rin. Isang malaking tulong din ‘to sa kumpyansa namin,” their mentor said.

For the Red Robins, Megan Galang topped the scoring column with 21 points. Still missing main man Jonnel Policarpio who continues to deal with personal problems, though, they dropped back-to-back games to begin their title defense.

Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University High School got back on track thanks to Gholam Garcia who imposed his will on hapless Colegio de San Juan de Letran for an 85-69 decision.

Garcia scored 23 points in efficient 9-of-12 shooting on top of eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals to carry the Light Bombers back into the win column now at 2-1.

On the other hand, the Squires remain winless in three games. Joshua Ramirez fronted their effort with 17 points.
