James Canlas had a season-high while "Bandana Bro" Evan Nelle had a career-best in San Beda's third win in a row in NCAA 95

NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament defending champion San Beda University had to overcome a slow start before getting the better of upstart Emilio Aguinaldo College, 89-72, Thursday inside the latter's Sports and Cultural Center in Manila.

The Red Lions just could not get going early on and found themselves in a 2-12 hole. "Credit to EAC, they really prepared well today and started strong," head coach Boyet Fernandez said.

Off a timeout, however, the three-time reigning kings finally woke up and went on a 22-4 tear to take a 24-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

They would not look back from there as the first five of James Canlas, Evan Nelle, Calvin Oftana, Donald Tankoua, and Clint Doliguez just proved to be too much for the Generals who had the backing of their home crowd.

All of the red and white's starters were in double-digits led by Canlas who turned in a season-best 21 points on top of five rebounds and three assists while Nelle turned in a career-high 15 markers to go along with seven dimes and four boards.

Tankoua then posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double while Oftana and Doliguez also added 14 and 10 markers, respectively.

In all, that first five overwhelmed their counterparts and had more than two-thirds of San Beda's output.

That, in coach Boyet's eyes, should be a challenge to his bench. As he put it, "Medyo malaki ang discrepancy dun. We need to work on that."

For EAC, Marwin Taywan topped the scoring column with 20 points while Kriss Gurtiza contributed 15 markers, eight rebounds, and three assists. Unable to build on its upset win against title contender Lyceum of the Philippines University, however, they dropped to 1-2 in the standings.
