LPU was not going to have a losing skid this early in NCAA 95
Lyceum of the Philippines University bounced back from its shock loss by venting its ire on winless Mapua University, 79-71, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Pirates were sunk for the first time in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament by upstart Emilio Aguinaldo College. "We're happy that we got back. We grinded it out with Mapua and it was kinda ugly, but we're always going to take the good with the bad," head coach Topex Robinson said post-game.
Three days later, they got a mighty rebound led by, of course, Jaycee Marcelino who had 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals as well as Toci Tansingco who had a season-high 14 markers of his own.
Reymar Caduyac also added an all-around 12 points, seven assists, and five rebounds while Jayson David turned in his best game in maroon and grey with a 10-marker, 12-board double-double.
Without a doubt, last year’s runners-up had to work for it as the young Cardinals were still threatening at 65-69 inside the last seven minutes.
It was at that point, though, that Marcelino and Caduyac joined forces for all the points in an 8-1 run that re-increased their lead to 77-66 with 2:57 remaining.
Both the comfortable lead and the momentum would remain with them until the final buzzer.
All of this was much welcome for LPU which improved to 2-1 in the standings. "Personally, I apologized to the team (after the loss). That was a learning experience for me," their mentor said.
For Mapua, rookie recruits fronted the effort with Paolo Hernandez scoring 19 points and five rebounds and Cyril Gonzales having 16 markers, two boards, and two assists. That still proved to be far from enough, however, as they remained winless in three games.
