JRU, expressly a rebuilding team, has gone streaking

Just like that, Jose Rizal University has taken flight in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament earlier than expected after jumping on University of Perpetual Help in a 71-66 wire-to-wire win, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

After three losses in a row to start the season, the Heavy Bombers have now won back-to-back games, proving to the rest of the league that head coach Louie Gonzalez’s rebuild is going as planned. "Actually, yung winning the last game, nagkaroon kami ng confidence. We're more relaxed, but still, I made sure na hindi kami mawala sa focus," head coach Louie Gonzalez said.

John Amores boosted the Kalentong ballers to a powerful beginning, never to lose the lead.

Still, the Altas were threatening at 53-56 inside the nine minutes before the quartet of Amores, JL Delos Santos, Ry Dela Rosa, and Marwin Dionisio responded with a 13-2 run to re-up JRU’s advantage to 69-55.

Amores wound up with 15 points and four rebounds while fellow rookie Delos Santos stuffed the stat sheet with seven markers, nine boards, six assists, and three steals. "We are lucky to have players na matatapang. These two, pagpasok ko, ang una kong tinignan is kung matapang sila," coach Louie said.

Rising sophomore Dela Rosa then contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists while Dionisio, another rookie, also added 12 markers and seven boards.

For Perps, Kim Aurin topped the scoring column with 14 points while Edgar Charcos and Tonton Peralta chipped in 13 markers apiece. Failing to get going all throughout, however, they have been dealt their third defeat in a row following a season-opening win.
