Defending champion San Beda College earned a much-needed three-day rest after shooting down San Sebastian College.
“I think they don’t want to lose.”
Even with San Sebastian College - Recoletos threatening to put a chip on the three-time defending champion San Beda College’s perfect slate up until midway in the payoff period, head coach Boyet Fernandez knew that his boys would pull this one through.
After all, a precious prize was at stake aside from keeping their perfect card.
Fernandez told his wards that a long rest will be their reward if they can add the Stags to their list of victims.
The Red Lions did just that on Friday in a great 73-59 escape to remain unscathed in the NCAA Season 95 seniors basketball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“I’m happy for the boys. They don’t want to really lose this game,” said Fernandez of his 4-0 squad. “Alam mo kasi may deal ako sa mga boys ko eh. If we win this game, we’ll have three days off.”
“For the first time in the history of our team, we’re giving three days off within the season,” the mentor added.
The Red Lions will have a week of rest before their next game and those three days off will be a welcome respite for Fernandez’s players.
“Kasi wala na nga silang pahinga after this, after our next game tuluy- tuloy na. We’re playing St. Benilde, Mapua then Letran tapos tuluy-tuloy na ‘yun,” explained Fernandez.
The five-time NCAA champion tactician saw the deal as a fitting reward for his hardworking wards.
“We thought that to really appreciate the boys for what they’re doing in practice so I made a deal, ‘If we win the game, even by one point, as long as we win against San Sebastian we’ll give a three days off for them,’” he said.
