San Beda 4-0
San Sebastian 2-2
Emilio Aguinaldo College finally got the monkey off its back in the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament, stunning Jose Rizal University High School, 75-69, for win no. 1, Thursday inside the latter's home gym in Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong.
The Brigadiers leaned on total team effort to, at long last, break through inside the winners' circle after six games.
Indeed, five different players got together in their 10-2 run that turned a one-point deficit with under two minutes remaining into a six-point win. "Chinallenge ko talaga sila how to end the game and have that winning moment sa ganitong crowd," a beaming head coach Azli Guro said in his first post-win interview.
Seldom-used Joshua Baruelo started it all off with an inside basket, his first and only make of the game, while Adrian Balowa and Mark Sanosa followed suit with a shot clock-beating triple and a split from the stripe, respectively.
Light Bombers scoring machine Gholam Garcia hit a putback to pull his side within three with 19.7 ticks to go, but Ron Encila and JR Ilustrisimo closed the door on them once and for all by going 3-of-4 from the line.
In the end, Balowa topped the scoring column with 22 points while Ilustrisimo also added 14 markers and seven rebounds.
Point guards Dandoy and Sanosa also tunred in big-time contributions as the former finished with 13 points, six assists, four rebounds, and two steals and the latter ended with 11 markers, two boards, two dimes, and two pilfers.
Even after the breakthrough win, though, EAC remains at the bottom of the standings at 1-5.
Still, coach Azli is nothing but hopeful they have turned the corner. "This is a good morale-booster for us. Sana, magtuloy-tuloy na talaga para sa amin," he said.
On the other hand, after back-to-back convincing victories, the Light Bombers have been sent crashing back to earth now at 4-3.
Garcia scored 14 points in 3-of-12 shooting while Condrad Famaranco and Vince Icban also struggled, only merging for seven markers in 3-of-13 shooting.
