Lyceum of the Philippines just sent its strongest statement thus far in the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament by taking down playoff contender College of St. Benilde-La Salle Green Hills, 74-68, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
John Barba showed the Jr. Pirates the way to a share of second now at 5-2 with 22 points on top of eight rebounds and four assists.
He delivered the goods when it mattered most, scoring eight points in the third quarter that saw them turning things around.
With the tiff getting tight in the final frame, Jae Omandac then came through for LPU, scoring half of his 16 points as they completed their comeback from as much as 10 points down in the first half.
Omandac wound up with a double-double, also hauling in 15 rebounds while Mac Guadana contributed 12 markers and seven boards to allow the Jr. Pirates to write the biggest name yet in their list of victims in the season.
The upstarts were just as impressive at the other end where they frustrated Jr. Blazers 1-2 punch of RC Calimag and Kobe Palencia to just a combined 12 points in 5-of-14 shooting to go along with eight turnovers.
With its main men struggling, CSB-LSGH was paced by Lennox Valenzuela who had 16 points while rookie Jan Manansala pounded in 13 markers and 15 rebounds which still proved far from enough from preventing their fall to 5-3.
