The NCAA Management Committee (MANCOM) recently turned over a cash donation of P100,000 to the province of Batanes for the victims of a devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake late last month.
Batanes provincial officials led by their governor Marilou Cayco personally received the financial assistance during halftime of the San Beda University-Letran College game at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
“We’re very thankful to the NCAA for their support to our province and our kababayans in Batanes. This is a big help for us as we try to recover from this disaster,” said Cayco.
“We have families still in the evacuation centers, roads that need to be fixed, and also buildings that have to be repaired. So this is a big help and we’re truly grateful to the NCAA,” she added.
NCAA Management Committee (MANCOM) chairman Peter Cayco of season host Arellano University said it is in line with the league’s advocacy, particularly to those affected by natural calamities.
“What we did is part of the league’s advocacy, and as the oldest collegiate tournament in the country, as an institution, we’ve extended our help to our fellow Filipinos in need,” said Cayco.
“The other member schools of the NCAA have done their part in helping our countrymen, but this time as one family, the NCAA has extended assistance to help Batanes,” added Cayco.
Letran’s MANCOM representative Fr. Vic Calvo made the proposal during its meeting recently hosted by Paul Supan during the NCAA ‘on tour’ match held at the Jose Rizal University.
Batanes suffered damage on houses and historical structures, including the old Santa Maria de Mayan Church in Itbayat.
The earthquake also resulted to nine fatalities, while 911 families, or 2,963 individuals were affected by the disaster and had an estimated damage amounting to P292 million by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
In the past, the league has extended support to calamities, like the victims of typhoons Yolanda and Ondoy, the tragedy during the Marawi siege. It also provided help to basketball legend Samboy Lim, a former Letran Knight.
