Melo Banua and all of San Sebastian dedicated their bounce back win to suspended head coach Egay Macaraya
San Sebastian College-Recoletos' campaign hasn't gone as planned in the earlygoing of the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Golden Stags had been seen as title contenders, but have instead stumbled out of the gates with a 2-3 record.
Worse, standing in their path to get back on track was another title contender in Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
And even worse, head coach Egay Macaraya wasn't there to guide them in their matchup opposite the Knights as he was serving a one-game suspension.
Still, Baste found a way to win last Tuesday, besting their age-old rivals in an overtime classic.
Of course, much credit goes to acting coach Melo Banua for that as he remained cool, calm, and collected and made sure they stood strong in the face of Letran's late rally.
This, only hours after he and his Staglets suffered a setback to the Squires.
According to Coach Melo, it was actually somebody who wasn't even at the venue who pushed him to move forward and turn his attention to the Srs. game between San Sebastian and Letran. "After ng (Jrs.) game namin, tumawag si coach Egay at sabi niya, 'Okay lang yan, focus ka na sa Srs. Wala tayong magagawa kasi puro bago ang players natin sa high school so move on na tayo,'" he shared.
He then continued, "Talagang ni-motivate niya ako na bumawi na lang sa Srs."
The young mentor and the Golden Stags did just that and in the end, dedicated their well-earned win to the head of their basketball program. As Banua put it, "Ino-offer namin ito kay Coach Egay talaga. Lalo na ako kasi parang tatay ko na siya talaga."
