Three-peat champion San Beda University ran roughshod on upstart College of St. Benilde, 88-57, to protect its perfect card in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Calvin Oftana and Evan Nelle both continued their personal tears and the Red Lions continued their unbeaten run with eight wins in as many games in their title defense.
Oftana collected another career-high of 27 points on top of nine rebounds and two steals while Nelle kept doing it all with eight markers, six assists, three boards, and two pilfers.
James Canlas and AC Soberano also provided big boosts with the former finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds, and four assists and the latter ending with 14 markers to his name.
All of the defending champions were also on-point, though, and in all, they shot 48.6 percent from the field.
The game was a blowout from the get-go as Oftana and Canlas combined for 11 points in the opening salvo and, by themselves, outscored all of the Blazers who only mustered nine.
San Beda would never look back as Nelle, Canlas, and Soberano joined in on the fun in the middle periods before turning it over yet again to Oftana who scored nine of his output in the final frame.
As impressive as the Red Lions' offense was their defense which locked down CSB throughout.
Jusitn Gutang and Jimboy Pasturan topped the scoring column for the Blazers with 10 points apiece, but merged to shoot 5-of-15 from the field. Unable to buy a basket all game long, they suffered a second straight setback following a 5-0 start to the season.
