San Beda University has gone undefeated in the first round of the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament after wrapping up its assignments with a 69-60 triumph over very game Mapua University, Friday at Cuneta Astrodome.
Calvin Oftana continued his personal tear for the league-leading Red Lions, posting another double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds on top of five assists.
James Canlas and Donald Tankoua contributed 10 points apiece as they won for the ninth time in as many games.
It definitely didn't come easy, though, as the Cardinals were taking it to the defending champions and even had a one-point lead, 45-44, late in the third quarter. "We're lucky we got this win. I salute Mapua for the job well done, but we have to go back to the drawing board and make our players realize we're not an invincible team," head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
It was at that point, however, that Oftana's dunk punctuated a 10-2 run that took back the lead for his side, 54-47.
Still, Mapua kept coming and threatened at 57-65 inside the last minute before James Canlas kept them at bay once and for all with a fastbreak layup.
In the end, Canlas had 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Donald Tankoua also added 10 markers and nine boards of his own.
Even though his boys are ahead of the three-team logjam for second, coach Boyet said they have much room to grow. As he put it, "We're lucky that we won nine straight, but I don't expect we're gonna win it all with the way we played today."
For the Cardinals, super rookie Paolo Hernandez showed the way with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Running out of gas in the endgame, though, they finish the first round at 3-6.
