With Arellano University threatening late in the game, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre, San Beda University went back to basics en route to a 73-66 decision that keeps its slate spotless in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.

Seeing its double-digit lead shrink to only one, 60-59, inside the last six minutes, the Red Lions went to Donald Tankoua for four possessions in a row. "Unang-una, I salute coach Cholo and the rest of the Arellano team. They did a good job today," head coach Boyet Fernandez said, referring to former assistant Cholo Martin who was now on the opposing sideline.

And the Cameroonian powerhouse did nothing but deliver, bullying Justin Arana for four inside baskets in a row. "Without Donald, we will not win this game. I'm happy he stepped up," his mentor said.

A split from the stripe by Evan Nelle then completed a 9-0 counter that ultimately wound up as the defending champions' 11th win in as many games.

Tankoua wound up with 20 points and nine rebounds while Nelle had for himself an all-around game with eight markers, seven boards, four assists, and two steals.

Clint Doliguez and James Canlas also added 12 and 11 points, respectively, to help San Beda stay at solo first in the standings.

Still, coach Boyet said he's looking for much more from his wards. "Teams are stronger right now and I hope we realize that. Hopefully, this will be a wake up call for us," he said.

For the Chiefs, Arana did the heavy lifting with a 23-point, 15-rebound double-double on top of four blocks and two assists. He was unable to do anything when the Red Lions' man in the middle turned it on, however, and saw his squad slide to 2-9 in the standings.
