Colegio de San Juan de Letran exacted revenge on one of its tormentors in the first round of the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament, rampaging through San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the final frame for a convincing 99-82 victory, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Jeo Ambohot’s follow up to end the third quarter sparked a 16-2 charge that turned a close contest, 68-65, in favor of the Knights into a blowout, 84-67, inside the last seven minutes.
The Golden Stags would try to mount a rally, of course, but they could only come as close as 15 the rest of the way.
Ambohot was joined by Jerrick Balanza, King Caralipio, and Tommy Olivario in that killer run that eventually ended as a bounce back win following a sorry double-overtime loss to Mapua University a week ago. "Not only yung last game na masakit na talo namin, pati yung nalo namin sa kanila dati, binalik namin. Yun yung motivation namin," head coach Bonnie Tan said post-game.
In the end, Ambohot had 11 points and seven rebounds while Caralipio and Olivario chimed in eight and four markers, respectively.
Larry Muyang and Bonbon Batiller then topped the scoring column with 15 points apiece as Balanza and Fran Yu each added 12 markers of their own.
That total team effort allowed Letran to exact revenge on Baste as the latter edged out the former in extra time back in their Round 1 meeting.
More importantly, the win moved up them to solo third at 8-4 while dragging down San Sebastian to solo fourth at 7-4.
Allyn Bulanadi paced the Golden Stags with 20 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals, and two assists while Alvin Capobres had 16 markers and eight boards to his name.
They sorely missed contributions from lead guard RK Ilagan, however, as he only had eight points in 2-of-10 shooting from the field to see his side's five-game win run come to a close.
