Lyceum of the Philippines University took College of St. Benilde’s best shot, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre, but still pulled off a 85-83 decision that keeps it at solo second in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Pirates figured in a tight tiff with the Blazers until the former turned on the pressure cooker and held the latter to scoreless from the 3:27 to the 1:03 mark of the final frame. "We struggled a bit in the first half, but we were able to pick it up. We just focused on making stops," head coach Michael Christopher Robinson said post-game.

At the other end, Jaycee Marcelino and Mike Nzeusseu’s aggressiveness paid dividends as they were sent to the line where they hit all four of their free throws.

Those, coupled with a steal and score by Marcelino put LPU on top, 82-73.

CSB didn’t quit just yet in the last two minutes, but Marcelino’s inside basket put the final nail in its coffin even as Kendrix Belgica and Unique Naboa lessened the winning margin to just two points.

Marcelino wound up with 22 points on top of seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists to propel the Pirates to their third win in a row and ninth overall in nine games.

Nzeusseu also posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double while Nino Ibanez chipped in 11 markers and seven boards of his own.

The latest win keeps LPU at solo second in the standings.

At the same time, they handed the Blazers their fifth loss in the last six games following a school-best 5-0 start to the season. Naboa topped the scoring column for them with 15 points while Justin Gutang tallied a triple-double of 12 markers, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
