With Colegio de San Juan de Letran trying its best to hold on for a much-needed win, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre, it was Fran Yu who put away College of St. Benilde once and for all.
With the Blazers only down five, 74-79, inside the last two minutes, Yu hit a booming triple that forced the other side to call timeout.
And with the Knights now up, 82-74, the third-year guard blew a kiss to their crowd and, once he turned to the opposite bench, bid bye-bye with his right hand.
"Ano kasi, basketball mindgames yun," he answered when asked about it after they wrapped up the 87-74 win. "Pag nagpadala ka sa kalaban mo, ayun, tulad ni Justin [Gutang], napikon siya, wala na siya."
Not long before, CSB main man Justin Gutang picked up three fouls in one minute to be forced to return and remain on their bench.
There, he witnessed Yu run roughshod on the Blazers all by himself, hitting five of his six shots from the free throw line as well as the triple that proved to be the backbreaker.
Make no mistake, however, the 21-year-old has no bad blood against Gutang - or any other opponent, for that matter. "With a smile naman yung bye-bye niya," head coach Bonnie Tan said.
Yu himself could only agree. "Walang galit. Walang galit. Basketball lang, pero pag sa labas, magkakaibigan kami."
More than the gesture, however, it was actually Yu's heart that was most notable. "Yung composure ko siguro ang nag-iba sa akin ngayon," he said, referring to the leap he has made from being a reserve guard for Letran's playoff team last year to being the primary playmaker for their title hopes this season.
And coach Bonnie is only glad to be a firsthand witness to that improvement. "Actually, he has improved a lot so sana, ma-maintain niya yung momentum," he said.
He then continued, through chuckles, "And wish ko lang sa kanya alagaan niya health niya kasi ayaw lumaki ng katawan e."
