Colegio de San Juan de Letran breathed much-needed life into its playoff hopes in the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament by bringing down title contender College of St. Benilde-La Salle Green Hills, 83-79, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Shawn Umali pounded in 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and a block and a steal apiece to power the Squires' upset that raises their record to 6-7 - well within striking distance of a place in the playoffs.
The big man was joined in double-digit scoring by CJ Saure with 15, Lenard Santiago with 13, and Joshua Ramirez with 11.
When the Jr. Blazers tried to mount one last push in the final frame, it was Umali, Saure, and Ramirez who had the answer for the Intramuros-based squad, combining with 24 points to outscore all of their opponents who only mustered 22.
Letran is only hoping to build on this big win as it looks to overtake 5-6 University of Perpetual Help as well as all of Arellano High School, Jose Rizal University High School and San Sebastian College-Recoletos who are at 6-6.
On the other hand, CSB-LSGH drops down into a tie for the second spot now at 7-5.
RC Calimag continued with his personal tear, posting a 28-point, 11-rebound double-double in this one, but that was far from enough from preventing their third loss in the last five games.
