NCAA 95: Red Cubs first to Final Four berth

San Beda University stormed past University of Perpetual Help, 100-97, to extend its winning streak to nine and more importantly nab the first Final Four seat in the NCAA Season 95 juniors basketball competition Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Five Red Cubs scored in double figures with Rhayyan Amsali leading the assault with 19 points, 11 rebounds and just four assists short of a triple-double in 31 minutes of play. Cyrus Llarena had 13 markers while Kent Pelipel torched the net from downtown with 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc to register 12 points for San Beda, which improved to 13-1 win-loss record.

Troy Valencia had 11 points while Justin Sanchez got 10 points for the Red Cubs, who controlled the boards, 55-41, and went ahead by as much as 21 in the second half.

The Junior Altas absorbed their seventh loss in 12 games despite the 25-point efforts of Emman Galman and Ed Galoy. Shawn Orgo had 15 markers, eight assists and eight rebounds in a lost cause for Perpetual.

Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University put defending champion Mapua in a precarious spot in the race for a semifinals berth after snatching a 77-74 win for a 7-6 card.   

Gholam Garcia and Raul Gentalan had 19 points each while Fred Ganut got 13 for the Light Bombers.

The Red Robins slipped to a 4-9 slate.

Leonel Policarpio posted a double-double with 23 points and 13 boards for Mapua.
