Kent Salado was in the driver's seat as Arellano University kept College of St. Benilde reeling in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament with a 75-69 decision, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Chiefs bucked a slow start and buried the Blazers in the middle periods to bag their fourth win in 14 games.
Down 2-9 early on, they outscored their opponents, 44-32, in the second and third quarters and then had a 17-point lead in the final frame.
Only, Justin Gutang willed the Taft-based team to as near as three, 69-72, with 45.7 ticks to go only to see Salado keep them at bay once and for all with two free throws. "Kanina, pressure talaga, pero sabi ko, kalma lang," head coach Cholo Martin said post-game.
In the end, Salado had 18 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals while Gelo Sablan chimed in 14 markers built on three triples.
Justin Arana also posted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double to go along with five blocks for Arellano which still stands far away from the playoff picture, but actually did more to hurt CSB's chances for the next round.
After a school-best 5-0 start to the season, the Blazers have now dropped seven of their last eight games to drop down to the sixth spot. Gutang showed the way for them in this one with 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
