Lyceum of the Philippines University got a big boost in its bid for a historic playoff berth after gunning down Mapua High School, 99-94, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Gyle Montano turned in a career game while John Barba and Mac Guadana tallied their usual numbers as the Jr. Pirates sailed to a share of second in a crazy competitive playoff race in the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Montano scored a career-best 28 points in efficient 11-of-18 shooting while also seizing seven rebounds and showing his crew the way back into the win column at 8-6.
It was Barba, though, who started strong and finished fine, firing 11 points in the opening salvo to get LPU going and then another 11 in the final frame to keep them ahead.
He wound up with 25 points to his name while Guadana contributed an all-around 19 points, seven assists, four steals, three rebounds, and two blocks.
The Jr. Pirates now have the inside track for the very first Final Four appearance in school history.
At the same time, they made it a powerful possibility that there will be a new champion.
With its 10th loss in 14 games, Mapua is now one loss away from being dethroned.
Jonnel Policarpio paced them as always with a 33-point, 12-rebound double-double.
