Lyceum of the Philippines University stretched its streak to five games in a row now in the dead heat of the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament after stopping very game Mapua University, 77-71, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Marcelino twins Jaycee and Jayvee fronted the finishing kick that raised the Pirates' record to 11-3.
LPU was taking it to its Intramuros neighbor for majority of the matchup until Justin Serrano and Warren Bonifacio carried the Cardinals into snatching away a 65-64 lead inside the last four minutes. "That's a really scary team, but we stayed composed especially down the stretch. What's important is how we stuck together," head coach Topex Robinson said post-game.
Indeed, the Marcelinos took matters into their own hands, conniving for six straight points in what eventually ended as a 13-2 backbreaker for their opponents and a 77-67 advantage in their favor.
A minute was still left on the clock, but LPU just turned on cruise control until the final buzzer.
In the end, JCM had 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals to his name while twin JVM had 10 markers, two boards, and two dimes.
Mike Nzeusseu also posted a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double to help the Pirates sail to a more comfortable margin for the second-seed from the likes of 9-6 Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 7-6 San Sebastian College-Recoletos, and 7-7 Mapua. "We're always gonna take those small wins. What's important is how we be better versions of ourselves," coach Topex said.
For the Cardinals, Serrano topped the scoring column with 17 points and five rebounds while Bonifacio tallied 15 markers and seven boards. They ran out of gas in the endgame, though, to see their four-game win run come to a close.
Still, the young red and gold have won seven of their last nine games to give themselves a good shot at the next round.
