San Beda University extended its reign over archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran with a dominant 75-63 decision, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Red Lions jumped on their fierce foes right from the get-go and never looked back all the way to their 15th win in as many games in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament. "Winning this game is just the icing on the cake for us for the effort we had in this game," head coach Boyet Fernandez said post-game.
The defending champions' blazed to a 17-1 beginning only to see the Knights charge right back into even tying the tally at 42-all in the third quarter.
Evan Nelle had the quick counter for San Beda, however, and masterfully orchestrated an attack that scored 20 unanswered to re-mount a 20-point lead, 62-42, late in the third quarter. "It's really the players who really worked hard for us. At least, naka-recover kami," their mentor said.
Both the double-digit lead and the momentum would remain with the red and white the rest of the way, ensuring they remained undefeated against Letran for four years running now.
In the end, Nelle had an all-around 12 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals. Even more impressive, he didn't turn the ball over in 34 minutes of play.
Calvin Oftana topped the scoring column with 16 points to go along with six rebounds while Clint Doliguez and James Canlas also added 13 and 12 markers, respectively, of their own.
For the Knights, Larry Muyang fronted the effort with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists. The two-headed monster at the backcourt of Jerrick Balanza and Bonbon Batiller struggled, however, with only a combined 13 markers in 2-of-15 shooting on top of five turnovers to see their side suffer a second straight setback and slide down to 9-6 in the standings.
