Both RK Ilagan and Allyn Bulanadi were misfiring, but Alvin Capobres still made it happen for San Sebastian College-Recoletos as they mowed down Jose Rizal University, 62-59, Thursday at Filoil Flying V Centre and marched forward to solo fourth in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Capobres scored 21 points on top of six rebounds and two assists and teamed up with JM Calma who posted a 12-marker, 13-board double-double to tow the Golden Stags back inside the winners' circle now at 8-6.
Those two more than made up for off-games from Ilagan and Bulanadi as the former finished with 11 points in 4-of-17 shooting and the latter ended with six markers in 2-of-14 shooting in the game Baste needed to win to keep pace in the playoff race.
Ilagan even missed two free throws with 8.8 ticks to go that would have iced the game, but he wasted no time making up for it with the offensive rebound.
Not long after, a split from the stripe by Rommel Calahat and a botched triple try by Chester Jungco cemented San Sebastian's rise to solo fourth - ahead of fifth-running and 7-7 Mapua University and 6-7 College of St. Benilde and just behind third running and 10-6 Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
For the Heavy Bombers, Thomas Vasquez and Arenal fronted the effort with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Absorbing their 10th defeat in 14 games, they are now on the brink of elimination.
