At long last, College of St. Benilde has returned to its winning ways in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament, routing Emilio Aguinaldo College, 62-56, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Before this game, the last time the Blazers were winners was last August 30 when they downed Jose Rizal University. "At least, we got back to our winning ways. We've been preaching that whatever happens, we win or we learn," head coach TY Tang said post-game.
Since then, the Taft-based team had been on a six-game losing skid that put a damper to its school-best 5-0 start to the season.
Now, however, CSB is finally back on track and is ready and raring to make one last push for the playoffs.
At 7-8, though, they have their work cut out for them as Mapua University is tied with them while 8-6 San Sebastian College-Recoletos and 10-6 Colegio de San Juan de Letran are above them in the standings. "We're in a blur with our situation, but we're just going to keep on fighting," coach TY said.
Without a doubt, this one took total team effort as it took nine unanswered points to end the third quarter to erase a one-point deficit, 43-44, and erect a 52-44 advantage.
Still, the Generals were threatening at 56-58 with 67 ticks to go on the clock before Yankie Haruna and Robbie Nayve had timely makes and their defense had timely stops to seal the deal in the Blazers' return to the win column.
Haruna wound up with 16 points, nine rebounds, and two steals while Nayve also added six markers, two boards, and two assists.
Justin Gutang then contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and two assists in his first time coming off the bench.
On the other hand, EAC absorbed their 13th loss in 16 outings. JP Maguliano paced them in this one with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double.
