San Beda University found itself in a tight tiff in the first half, Thursday at Filoil Flying V Centre before finding a way to pull off a dominant 95-73 decision against desperate College St. Benilde and forcing its way one step closer to a clean sweep of the elimination round in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Calvin Oftana sparked the charge with 29 points to go along with nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals while James Canlas also stuffed the stat sheet with 21 markers, nine boards, and seven assists of his own.
Behind those two, the Red Lions erupted for 31 points in the third quarter to take complete control of the contest.
This, after they found themselves playing the pace of the Blazers who were desperate for a win. "Simple lang naman sinabi ko sa players nung halftime - mahiya naman sila sa sarili nila," head coach Boyet Fernandez said as they were down, 41-42, at halftime.
Coach Boyet's wards did nothing but answer his call from there as Oftana scored 13 of his output while Peter Alfaro fired all nine of his points in the third quarter that, all of a sudden, boosted them way ahead, 58-41.
Those two, by themselves, outscored the Taft-based team in the same timeframe, 22-16.
The defending champions would not be threatened in the final frame as they marched forward to a win away from an elims sweep and an automatic advance into the Finals.
At the same time, they sent CSB to 7-9 - on the brink of elimination even after a 23-point outing from Justin Gutang.
The Blazers are now hoping that Mapua University down San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the two teams' ongoing matchup.
A Golden Stag win will complete the cast for the Final Four and close the door once and for all on both Mapua and CSB.
