San Sebastian College-Recoletos is one win away from returning to the playoffs now in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Golden Stags made sure they didn't give themselves a tougher time in the playoff race by taking care of business against also-ran Arellano University, 85-82, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
RK Ilagan and Allyn Bulanadi did the heavy lifting as always for Baste with the former finishing with 20 points, six rebounds, and three assists and the latter ending with 19 markers, eight boards, and six dimes.
That 1-2 punch delivered the 13-3 haymaker that turned a two-point deficit, 65-67, inside the last eight minutes into a 78-70 advantage with under two minutes left. "Ang mahirap kasi, with all the injuries I have, yung playoffs, medyo mahirap pa rin sa amin," head coach Egay Macaraya.
Kent Salado buried a big-time triple to keep the Chiefs coming, but Bulanadi and Ken Villapando's back-to-back layups finished the job in San Sebastian's rise to 11-7.
Now, they just need one more mark in the win column to formalize their entry in the Final Four.
The good news for the Golden Stags is they got big-time contributions from their other guys with JM Calma pounding in 15 points and nine rebounds, Alvin Capobres pouring in 15 markers and two boards, and Villapando posting a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Baste is hoping for the same sort of effort on Friday against University of Perpetual Help as with a win there, they close the door on fifth-running and 9-8 Mapua University. "I just hope we win so that we can go automatic sa Final Four," coach Egay said.
Otherwise, they will have to hope that the Cardinals fall to College of St. Benilde on the same day.
Nonetheless, coach Egay's boys are already assured of at least a playoff for a spot in the next round - already an improvement from last year when they finished way out of the playoff picture at 6-12.
At the same time, their win eliminated the Blazers from contention as after a school-best 5-0 start to the season, the latter will no longer be able to go higher than nine wins.
For Arellano which fell to 4-13, Salado was the high man with 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
