Ry Dela Rosa finished what he started, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre, fueling Jose Rizal University past Arellano University, 77-73, en route to a fine finish in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Dela Rosa posted a career-high 21 points built on five triples to go along with four rebounds, powering the Heavy Bombers to a share of seventh and a standing of 5-13 to close their campaign. "Lagi kong tinuturo sa kanya, you have to take charge and take over. Yun ang nangyari ngayong game na ito," head coach Louie Gonzalez said post-game.
It was two free throws from the second-year guard, however, that got together with Agem Miranda's own couple of charities in the last seven seconds that proved to be the difference for their side.
With the two teams all even at 73 with 43 ticks to go, they exchanged defensive stops before Miranda's aggressiveness bore fruit as he fished for a foul.
He made good on two free throws and at the other end, JRU stood strong on defense yet again with JL Delos Santos blocking Kent Salado's triple try.
Sent to the line, Dela Rosa put the cherry on top of the cake that was their big-time win to close their campaign.
Miranda wound up with 13 points, six assists, and two rebounds while Thomas Vasquez chipped in 13 markers, four boards, three dimes, and two steals.
With the win, the Heavy Bombers made sure to improve on their 3-15 and last-place finish from a season ago.
And next year, they are returning the very same core and are raring to do even better. "For today, we just wanted to finish this season on a high note para maganda ang baon natin next year," coach Louie said.
For the Chiefs, Salado showed the way as always with 22 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals. Unable to lead his team in his last game in blue and grey, however, they dropped to the bottom of the standings at 4-14.
