San Beda High School took the best shot of College of St. Benilde-La Salle Green Hills, but still came away with a well-earned 82-79 win at the start of the Final Four of the NCAA 95 Juniors Basketball Tournament, Tuesday at Cuneta Astrodome.
Yukien Andrada came up big with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Rhayyan Amsali and Justine Sanchez posted double-doubles of their own as the Red Cubs claimed their first Finals berth since 2016. "Sila yung mga beterano sa team kaya dapat talagang magpakita silang 'di nape-pressure sa endgame," head coach Manu Inigo said post-game.
Indeed, the veterans came up clutch, but it was Andrada who came through when it mattered most.
With the tally tied at 76-all inside the last minute, he cleaned up a miss by Sanchez and got fouled in the process.
The graduating forward calmly converted the bonus and at the other end, teamed up with Sanchez to force Kobe Palencia into a forced shot inside.
Andrada was then again sent to the line and made good on both of his attempts to put San Beda up, 81-76, with 20.4 ticks to go.
A pair of defensive stops and a split from the stripe by Tony Ynot later and they were celebrating a return to the championship round where they will continue their quest to end a four-year drought. "Siyempre, thankful kami kay God kasi matagal-tagal nang 'di nakakarating sa Finals ang San Beda," coach Manu said as they now await the winner between twice-to-beat Lyceum of the Philippines University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
He then continued, "Tuloy pa rin ang dasal na tuloy-tuloy na hanggang championship.
Ynot wound up with eight points and three assists, Amsali finished with 12 markers and 17 rebounds, and Sanchez ended with 10 points and 17 boards.
It also didn't hurt the Red Cubs' chances that LSGH main man RC Calimag was in uniform, but did not play due to injury.
In his stead, JC Macalalag gave his all with 23 points and six rebounds while Jan Manansala had an 18-marker, 13-board double-double.
Palencia contributed 13 points, five assists, and five rebounds in his last game in green and white.
