Lyceum of the Philippines University secured the second-seed in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament on October 11.

It was only last Tuesday, November 5, however, that the Pirates knew who they were facing off with.

By virtue of San Beda University's sweep of the elimination round, stepladder playoffs ensued among second-seed LPU, third-seed Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and fourth-seed San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

In the first rung, the Knights bested the Golden Stags.

That then set a date opposite the Pirates on Friday.

That also meant, though, that both teams only had three days to prepare for their do-or-die game. "Nag-fine tuning lang kami nung long break namin. Hindi kami gaano nakapag-prepare for Letran (specifically) kasi the other day lang namin nalaman na sila makakalaban namin," LPU head coach Topex Robinson said.

Make no mistake, however, coach Topex knows full well how dangerous Letran is. As he put it, "They are still the Letran team that came into this season - a loaded team, a well-coached team. They've gotten even better since the last time we played them."

In the two teams' two meetings in the elimination round, the Pirates got the better of the Knights.

Still, heading into their stepladder showdown, the Pirates have had nearly a month-long layoff while the Knights are coming off a big-time takedown of the Golden Stags.

Nonetheless, true to form, coach Topex said he and his boys just have their sights set on what they can do to inspire others. "Sa amin naman kasi, it's all about how we're going to play our game. We've always been about focusing on what we have control of," he shared.

He then continued, "Whoever we face, it's about how we're going to be better. Yun ang barometer namin - yung kontrolado namin."

And so, expect nothing but LPU continue being LPU even after just three days of preparation for Letran. "We know how strong they are, but for us, we're focusing on what we have control of and how we're going to play on both ends," their mentor said.
