For the first time in two years, it won’t be Lyceum of the Philippines University challenging San Beda University in the Finals.
Instead, the Pirates will be watching from home as the Red Lions wage war with age-old rival Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the championship round.
That was set in stone after the Knights ousted their Intramuros neighbors last Friday.
Make no mistake, it wasn’t a lack of trying - especially on the part of Marcelino twins Jaycee and Jayvee. “Lahat naman, binigay namin sa laro e. Kinapos lang talaga at swerte sila,” Jaycee said.
Jayvee could only agree. As he put it, “Wala kamkng regret sa ginawa namin dahil lumaban kami kanina. Hindi kami bumigay kahit malaki na lamang nila, pero kinapos lang talaga.”
Indeed, behind its game-changing twins, LPU battled back from behind 12 points inside the last five minutes to still make a game out of it until the dying moments.
Ultimately, they lost, but Jaycee still had 26 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Jayvee had five markers, three boards, three dimes, and two steals to his name.
Of course, they have their eyes on a redemption season.
At the same time, though, they also have their eyes on their future.
Asked if they will be returning for a fourth and final year in maroon and grey, Jayvee answered, “Dependa pa.”
He then furthered, “Naglalaban talaga e. Ngayon, nasa isip naming bumawi next year, pero yung draft, nandyan din kasi kailangan na naming mairaos pamilya namin.”
The twins are already eligible for the oncoming PBA Draft and two-way guard Jaycee is a lock for the first round while defensive energizer Jayvee could also go as high as Round 1.
With that golden opportunity, they could cap off a remarkable rise that has seen them go from Olongapo to San Marcelino before finally finding their place in LPU.
Make no mistake, though, the Marcelinos know full well they still have unfinished business as Pirates. “Sa ngayon, pantay talaga e,” Jaycee answered when asked which choice they were leaning towards.
He then continued, “Pinag-iisipan pa talaga namin. Kakausapin namin yung LPU community kung babalik pa kami, pero ngayon, pahinga muna namin utak namin.”
