San Beda University's dominance in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament has extended into the Mythical Team.
Three of the five selections as the best of the best individual players are Red Lions as MVP Calvin Oftana was joined by teammates James Canlas and Evan Nelle.
This is, of course, nothing but a welcome development. "It's really a big boost to the confidence of the players who won it and to the whole team," head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
And it is even more so for Mendiola's proud program. "This proves that we have a solid basketball program that takes care of its players - improving their basketball skills and giving them a solid educational program as well to prepare them after basketball," coach Boyet said.
At the same time, though, the multi-titled mentor made it clear that individual awards were never their goal. "But again, we know our goal. Dito sa San Beda, anything short of a championship is a disappointment," he said right before their must-win Game 2 against archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
He then continued, "We don't want to disappoint our community."
Rounding out the Mythical Team are San Sebastian College-Recoletos' Allyn Bulanadi and Lyceum of the Philippines University's Jaycee Marcelino.
San Beda then had another awardee in the form of Cameroonian Donald Tankoua who was hailed as the first-ever Best Foreign Player.
Meanwhile, Justin Arana of Arellano University won Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Fran Yu of Colegio de San Juan de Letran won Most Improved Player, and Mike Nzeusseu of LPU won Best Defensive Foreign Player.
