Defending champion Arellano University tests the mettle of Mapua University as the Lady Chiefs gun for their second straight win and a hold of the early lead on Thursday in the NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The four-peat-seeking Arellano U opened their campaign on a high note after beating Lyceum of the Philippines University, 27-25, 25-20, 25-20, last Friday. The squad was supposed to face Emilio Aguinaldo College last Monday but the NCAA maganement called for the suspension of Monday and Tuesday playdates following the eruption of Taal Volcano.

With an intact core led by graduating hitter Regine Arocha, who had 18 points in the Lady Chiefs’ season debut, and middle Carla Donato, Arellano U is tipped to outgun the Lady Cardinals in their 2:00 p.m. encounter.

The game will air via iWant.

Mapua, which only won one game in nine outings last year, is hoping to start on the right track with a more mature lineup bannered by Lorraine Barias.

Meanwhile, San Sebastian College makes its debut against Jose Rizal University at 12:00 noon.

The Lady Stags, who will parade nine new faces, is expected to face a lot of adjustments this season after the departure of their key players with only five holdovers led by libero Jewelle Bermillo, Kamille Tan and Shane Requirme.

Calling the shot for SSC-R is Norvie Labuga who will take over the spot of long-time mentor Roger Gorayeb, who is still recovering from multiple myeloma.

The Lady Bombers, on the other hand, will rely heavily on Dolly Verzosa on offense after the departure of Karen Montojo while Rizza Rose and Renesa Melgar are expected to provide veteran support.

In men’s play, the Chiefs also seek back-to-back wins in a showdown with the Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. while the Stags and heavy Bombers clash at 10:00 a.m.

The juniors match between JRU and SSC-R is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. while Arellano U and Mapua cross paths at 5:30 p.m.
