Rookies Gayle Pascual and Mycah Go displayed grit and grace under pressure to power College of St. Benilde to a 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 15-7 win over upset-conscious Lyceum of the Philippines University on Friday in the NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Blazers' freshmen scored five points each in the deciding frame as CSB won its second straight match for a share of the lead with defending three-time champion Arellano University.

From a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth set, the pair connived for the Lady Blazers’ six unanswered points to build a comfortable cushion. LPU moved within 11-7 before CSB took the next four points capped by Pascual’s match-clinching crosscourt hit.

“Siyempre po since fifth set na po ‘yun sayang naman po yung pinaghirapan namin na kunin ang two sets kung bibitawan namin agad,” said Pascual, who led the Taft-based squad with 18 points including 15 hits. “Iniisip po namin na ilaban talaga ang fifth set.”

Go displayed another all-around effort with 17 points, six digs and 17 excellent receptions while Jade Gentapa tallied 15 markers for CSB.

CSB bounced back in the fourth set after letting the third frame slip from its hands in the closing stretch, building an early lead to force the game into a decider.

The Lady Pirates absorbed their second straight defeat in as many games.

Ciamelle Wanta saw her 21-point explosion – all from kills - went down the drain with LPU’s third straight elims head-to-head loss to CSB, which nailed 12 aces.

Mary Joy Onofre finished with 16 makers with half coming off kill blocks while Monica Sevilla and Alexandra Rafael got 12 and 11 points, respectively, for LPU.

Meanwhile, the Blazers barged in the win column after crushing the Pirates, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18, behind Ruvince Abrot's and James Laguit's 14 and 12 points, respectively.

CSB improved to 1-1 slate while LPU dropped to 0-2 card.
