Lyceum of the Philippines University arrested a three-game slide at the expense of skidding Jose Rizal University, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23, on Saturday in the NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
After a string of sorry losses to start their campaign, the Lady Pirates finally claimed victory, but not after some anxious moments in the third frame.
Lyceum saw its eight-point lead, 17-9, in the third frame erased by the gritty Lady Bombers, who knotted the count at 17. The Lady Pirates opened a 21-17 cushion only to allow JRU to tie it again at 23.
But the breaks of the game favored LPU after JRU’s Jonazel Egera sent her service long followed by an attack error as the Lady Pirates emerged victorious.
“Successful kami sa plano namin, sa paghahanda sa kanila. At the same time nagkakaroon ng self-confidence ang mga bata,” said LPU coach Emil Lontoc.
Mary Joy Onofre led three other LPU players in double figures with 15 points including five off kill blocks. Skipper Ciamelle Wanta got 14 markers, all from attacks, a d added nine digs while Alexandra Rafael and Jacqueline Acuna scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Intramuros-based squad.
In contrast, the Lady Bombers started their season with a win only to nosedive to a three-game skid to tie their tormentors at seventh to eight.
Dolly Verzosa finished with 12 points while Mary May Ruiz got eight for JRU.
