University of Perpetual Help extended its winning run to five while halting three-time defending champion Arellano University's five-game victory streak in a rematch of last year's finals.
University of Perpetual Help climbed out of a two-set hole before completing a 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-12, 16-14, come-from-behind victory over three-time defending champion Arellano University in the NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Wednesday.
The Lady Altas took advantage of the Lady Chiefs’ error-filled outing including a costly miscue in the closing stretch of the fifth set in a rematch of last year’s finals series as Perpetual grabbed its fifth straight win in six starts.
Jhona Rosal blasted 13 attacks in her 15-point outing laced with 17 digs to show the way for Perpetual, which joined its victim at second spot behind College of St. Benilde (5-0).
Skipper Jenny Gaviola scored 12 points highlighted by seven kill blocks and tallied eight excellent sets while Dana Persa fired 10 markers and had 11 excellent receptions for the Las Pinas-based squad, which bowed to Arellano U in the championship series last year in three games.
Perpetual coach Macky Carino praised his wards net defense and overall effort especially in the fifth set.
“Noong nakakuha kami noong third at fourth, inulit lang namin tapos nakapag-step up 'yun blockings talaga namin,” he said. “From third set hanggang fifth set, blockings talaga 'yung bumuhay sa amin. And siyempre sa effort ng mga players ko, 'yung willingness nila manalo.”
Riding on the momentum of their strong showing in the fourth set, the Lady Altas opened a 9-4 advantage in the fifth only to see the Lady Chiefs behind power-hitting Regine Arocha fight back.
Bianca Tripoli put Perpetual at match point, 14-12, but Arellano U refused to go down easily, saving two match points.
But a costly service error by Donnalyn Paralejas – the Lady Chiefs' last of an atrocious 48 miscues – doomed Arellano U as Gaviola scored Perpetual’s last of 12 kill blocks off Princess Bello’s attack.
Arocha finished with 23 points with all but one coming off kills and had 10 excellent receptions while Bello posted 16 markers and 19 digs for the Lady Chiefs. Carla Donato chipped in 10 points.
Meanwhile, the reigning two-time men's champions Altas captured their sixth win in as many games after turning back the Chiefs, 28-26, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, behind the 25-point explosion of Louie Ramirez.
Arellano U dropped its second straight match after a three-game win streak.
In juniors play, the Braves shocked five-time defending champion Junior Altas, 25-21,21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10, to take the solo lead with a perfect 6-0 slate.
Perpetual fell to 5-1 card.
