Ciamelle Wanta displayed her firepower to lead Lyceum of the Philippines University to an important win over Mapua University, 25-21, 25-11, 25-16, Thursday to stay in the hunt for a semifinals seat in the NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Facing a must-win situation, the Lady Pirates turned to their team captain to notch their third win in seven games.

Wanta had 12 points highlighted by 11 kills while adding 10 digs for the Intramuros-based squad. She got ample support with Monica Sevilla and Alexandra Rafael putting in 11 points each for LPU’s 66-minute drubbing of the Lady Cardinals.

Wanta and Rafael combined for 21 of the Lady Pirates’ 37 attack points while Venice Puzon tallied 13 excellent sets as LPU formally eliminated Mapua in the Final Four race.

The Lady Cardinals suffered their fifth straight defeat for a 1-6 card and slid down to ninth place.

Alissa Magallanes led Mapua with eight points while Lorraine Barias’ scoring slump continued with just six markers.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals trio of Raje Hizon, John San Andres at Alfredo Pagulong connived to turn back the Pirates, 27-25, 25-18, 25-18, and improve to a 4-3 mark to bolster their fight for a semis seat in the men’s division.

The troika scored 12 points each with Hizon and Pagulong combining for 22 of Mapua’s 41 kills.

LPU dropped to 1-6 slate tied with Jose Rizal University.

In juniors’ play, the Junior Pirates improved to a 3-4 card after beating the Red Robins, who dropped to 1-6 slate, 28-26, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23.
