Fran Yu was born and bred in Manila and played for University of the East.
His journey has parallels to Paul Lee who is also proudly from the country's capital and suited up for the Red Warriors.
Of course, while Lee starred for most of his time in red and white, Yu moved on from Recto and ultimately took his talents to Colegio de San Juan de Letran where he finally broke out.
Still, a common thread ties the two together.
Lee said so himself. "Nung unang nakita kita sa UE, para talagang naalala ko yung sarili ko sayo. Alam mo yung sobrang payat, parang butiki sa eskwelahan, parang pinagtatawanan sa court," he said in The Prospects Pod last Friday.
He then continued, "Pero talagang tinrabaho mo then kitang-kita naman sa nangyari ngayon, nag-Finals MVP ka, nag-champion ka."
Yu was reed-thin coming out of Chiang Kai Shek College.
Famously, one comment from the internet even questioned where he came from - and, essentially, just who he was.
In Lee's eyes, however, all that only became additional fuel to the now-Knight's already burning fire.
And the "Angas ng Tondo" reminded Yu to keep doing just that. As he put it, "Kailangan, yung fire mo na yun, hindi mawawala sayo kasi yun yung pinakaimportante. Gawin mong motivation lagi yung mga nanlalait sayo before."
He then continued, "Kasi yun yung pinakamasarap kapag, kunwari, nakarating ka na kung nasaan man ako ngayon. Lagat ng nanlalait sayo dati, mahal na mahal ka na ngayon."
