PCU and Letran went right at each other in the mid-00s
Philippine Christian University and Colegio de San Juan de Letran was THE rivalry in the NCAA from 2004 to 2005.
In Season 80, the twice-to-beat Dolphins booted out the third-seeded Knights en route to the championship.
A season after, Intramuros exacted its revenge on Taft Avenue in the three-game Finals.
Looking back now, the blue and red could only acknowledge that PCU was its fiercest foe at that time - and not archrival San Beda University or another traditional powerhouse in San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
"Pag kalaban namin kayo, nagpe-prepare talaga kami nang todo," Letran big man Mac Andaya told Beau Belga, formerly of the Dolphins, in Extra Rice. "Ikaw, si Gabby [Espinas], si Jayson [Castro], marami kayong bala e. Kapag PCU, bawal off-game."
Indeed, Andaya and Belga got to know each other up close and personal because of all those much anticipated matchups.
They were not necessarily in good terms, however. "Nung college, parang personal talaga e, diba?" Andaya recalled.
He then continued, "PCU kayo, Letran lang kami. Maraming beses, nakakasalubong kita, pero 'di tayo nagpapansinan."
For reference, the two schools are only a 10-minute walk away from each other.
After moving on from the fire and desire of school spirit, however, Andaya and Belga became fast friends. "Yun naman ang kagandahan sa pros eh. Kinakalimutan na dun yung nakaraan," the latter said.
For his part, though, Andaya had to be honest in saying that Belga was far from his most challenging matchup in the NCAA. "Sorry, boy, pero si Espinas eh," he said through chuckles.
